ASUS Philippines leads the way in providing ICT tools and Computer Literacy Programs
The phrase “In Search of Incredible” has always been more than just a simple brand manifesto for ASUS. It does not only represent the brand’s steadfast commitment to showcase the latest, industry-leading innovations through its products. Rather, it has and will always be the main guiding principle of the company and its employees to make sure that its resources are greatly utilized for the improvement of lives and for the betterment of the society.
For over 10 years now, the ASUS Foundation and the Institute for Information Industry (III) of Taiwan have partnered with the Philippines’ National Computer Center (NCC), and the Information, Communication & Technology Office of the Department of Science & Technology (ICTO-DOST) in ensuring that the country has a sustainable e-learning centers across the country under the APEC Digital Opportunity Center (APEC ADOC) project which aims to help and empower the youth and as well as key government officials from selected areas of Metro Manila, Cagayan de Oro and Bacolod through the power of technology.
Moreover, since 2010, the ASUS Foundation has also successfully sponsored the ADOC International Volunteers program to the Philippines, where several ASUS staff and college students from Taiwan have continuously signed-up to experience the rewarding acts as volunteer-lecturers to these ASUS ADOC e-learning centers all over the country.
Hand-in-Hand with the QC Community
To further this special cause and fruitful partnership that has already helped numerous communities in the Philippines, top representatives from the aforementioned offices and local NGOs first joined forces anew for the official renewal of the ASUS ADOC e-learning center in Quezon City, last April 6, 2016.
Using Technology as a Platform to Help Improve Lives
A day after, ASUS’ meaningful contributions also reached Cagayan de Oro, with various groups of young students and youth members now having access to internet and to 20 sets of ASUS PCs and monitors as donated by the Fil-Chi Love & Care Foundation. These donations were set-up for the use of the Field Operations Office- Mindanao Cluster 2 of the ICTO- DOST — the office that spearheads the Digital and Internet Literacy programs, as well as Rural Impact Sourcing workshops for communities part of Region X and XIII.
The ceremonial turnover of ASUS units in CDO was graced by Taipei Economic & Cultural Office’s (TECO) Economic Director Mr. Nick Ni, who was on hand to give a few inspirational words about the relationship between the two neighboring countries: “Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills are very critical in this new digital era. And given Taiwan’s experience and expertise with the ICT industry, many Taiwanese companies are already partnering with Philippine based NGOs to ensure that all necessary ICT literacy courses are well provided.
On the same day, the ASUS Foundation then headed to Bacolod City where a renewed Mobile e-learning center (a transformed 40-foot container trailer that roves around provinces) was launched in partnership with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. This momentous event was witnessed by Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in the Philippines Representative Dr. Gary Sung-Huan Lin; who was joined once again by III’s Mr. Cheng; Fil-Chi Love & Care Foundation’s Mr. and Mrs. Huang; and ASUS Philippines’ Mr. Su.
For this particular project, 21 sets of brand-new ASUS PC and LCD monitors were provided by the ASUS Foundation and the Bacold Fil-Chi Chamber of Commerce & Industries, which will ultimately assist the growing community of youth, children and even government officials in the entire Negros province.
Building More Incredible Milestones in the Philippines
In cooperation with the ADOC Project, the ASUS Foundation has already successfully set-up a total of 8 ADOC e-learning centers, located in the rural areas of Luzon and Visayas regions, with each center being properly equipped with more than 20 units of ASUS Desktop PCs and LCD Monitors, and two well-trained lecturers.
ASUS Philippines Country Manager Mr. George Su concludes by highlighting the long-term impact of this CSR initiative: “With the help of our partner organizations, ASUS has and is transforming the lives of more than 20,000 students and under-privileged youth in impoverished areas in the Philippines, all of whom are now given the opportunity to improve their computer literacy, skills and knowledge. We have seen first-hand how the technical education that is provided in these e-learning centers are helpful for them in the long-run, and so we remain committed to touch and improve even more lives in the Philippines with our future plans and partnerships that ensures inclusive and sustainable growth.”

One New Zero-Day Discovered on Average Every Week in 2015, Twice then in 2014
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Symantec’s (Nasdaq:SYMC) Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR), Volume 21, reveals an organizational shift by cybercriminals: They are adopting corporate best practices and establishing professional businesses in order to increase the efficiency of their attacks against enterprises and consumers. This new class of professional cybercriminal spans the entire ecosystem of attackers, extending the reach of enterprise and consumer threats and fueling the growth of online crime.
“Advanced criminal attack groups now echo the skill sets of nation-state attackers. They have extensive resources and a highly-skilled technical staff that operate with such efficiency that they maintain normal business hours and even take the weekends and holidays off,” said Kevin Haley, director, Symantec Security Response. “We are even seeing low-level criminal attackers create call center operations to increase the impact of their scams.”
Advanced professional attack groups are the first to leverage zero-day vulnerabilities, using them for their own advantage or selling them to lower-level criminals on the open market where they are quickly commoditized. In 2015, the number of zero-day vulnerabilities discovered more than doubled to a record-breaking 54, a 125 percent increase from the year before, reaffirming the critical role they play in lucrative targeted attacks. Meanwhile, malware increased at a staggering rate with 430 million new malware variants discovered in 2015. The sheer volume of malware proves that professional cybercriminals are leveraging their vast resources in attempt to overwhelm defenses and enter corporate networks.
Over Half a Billion Personal Records Stolen or Lost in 2015
Data breaches continue to impact the enterprise. In fact, large businesses that are targeted for attack will on average be targeted three more times within the year. Additionally, we saw the largest data breach ever publicly reported last year with 191 million records compromised in a single incident. There were also a record-setting total of nine reported mega-breaches. While 429 million identities were exposed, the number of companies that chose not to report the number of records lost jumped by 85 percent. A conservative estimate by Symantec of those unreported breaches pushes the real number of records lost to more than half a billion.
“The increasing number of companies choosing to hold back critical details after a breach is a disturbing trend,” said Haley. “Transparency is critical to security. By hiding the full impact of an attack, it becomes more difficult to assess the risk and improve your security posture to prevent future attacks.”
Encryption Now Used as a Cybercriminal Weapon to Hold Companies’ and Individuals’ Critical Data Hostage
Ransomware also continued to evolve in 2015, with the more damaging style of crypto-ransomware attacks growing by 35 percent. This more aggressive crypto-ransomware attack encrypts all of a victim’s digital content and holds it hostage until a ransom is paid. This year, ransomware spread beyond PCs to smartphones, Mac and Linux systems, with attackers increasingly seeking any network-connected device that could be held hostage for profit, indicating that the enterprise is the next target.
Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You: Cyber Scammers Now Make You Call Them to Hand Over Your Cash
As people conduct more of their lives online, attackers are increasingly focused on using the intersection of the physical and digital world to their advantage. In 2015, Symantec saw a resurgence of many tried-and-true scams. Cybercriminals revisited fake technical support scams, which saw a 200 percent increase last year. The difference now is that scammers send fake warning messages to devices like smartphones, driving users to attacker-run call centers in order to dupe them into buying useless services.
From the Experts: Security Tips and Tricks
As attackers evolve, there are many steps businesses and consumers can take to protect themselves. As a starting point, Symantec recommends the following best practices:
For Businesses:
Don’t get caught flat-footed: Use advanced threat and adversary intelligence solutions to help you find indicators of compromise and respond faster to incidents.
Employ a strong security posture: Implement multi-layered endpoint security, network security, encryption, strong authentication and reputation-based technologies. Partner with a managed security service provider to extend your IT team.
Prepare for the worst: Incident management ensures your security framework is optimized, measureable and repeatable, and that lessons learned improve your security posture. Consider adding a retainer with a third-party expert to help manage crises.
Provide ongoing education and training: Establish simulation-based training for all employees as well guidelines and procedures for protecting sensitive data on personal and corporate devices. Regularly assess internal investigation teams—and run practice drills—to ensure you have the skills necessary to effectively combat cyber threats.
For Consumers:
Use strong passwords: Use strong and unique passwords for your accounts. Change your passwords every three months and never reuse your passwords. Additionally, consider using a password manager to further protect your information.
Think before you click: Opening the wrong attachment can introduce malware to your system. Never view, open, or copy email attachments unless you are expecting the email and trust the sender.
Protect yourself: An ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure. Use an internet security solution that includes antivirus, firewalls, browser protection and proven protection from online threats.
Be wary of scareware tactics: Versions of software that claim to be free, cracked or pirated can expose you to malware. Social engineering and ransomware attacks will attempt to trick you into thinking your computer is infected and get you to buy useless software or pay money directly to have it removed.
Safeguard your personal data: The information you share online puts you at risk for social engineered attacks. Limit the amount of personal information you share on social networks and online, including login information, birth dates and pet names.
Symantec will host a webinar on this year’s ISTR results on Tuesday, May 3, at 9:00 a.m. PT. For more information or to register, please go here.

China is now the second global market in terms of iOS revenue
Although it became the market with most iOS downloads back in Q1 2015,
China generates less iOS revenue than the US, but has recently surpassed
Japan and grabbed the second position worldwide.
China is a huge market for mobile games and
various services and, despite the lower purchasing power, it might soon
overcome the US in terms of iOS revenue. Back in Q1 2015, the country
became the world's largest market for Apple, at least when talking about
the amount of apps downloaded via App Store.
Earlier
in 2016, app store analytics firm App Annie unveiled their expectations
for China, saying this market would become the iOS market leader in
terms of revenue by the end of the year. That did not happen yet, but
China has just left Japan behind and grabbed the second place when
talking about iOS-generated revenue. The same source reveals that
China’s iOS revenue grew more than two times from Q1 2015 to Q2 2015, an
impressive growth driven mainly by in-app purchases.
In
the other camp, while Google Play downloads were 1.5 times more than
iOS downloads in 2015, Apple still managed to lead in terms of revenue.
Even more, the US market still leads China by roughly 30 percent, so
this battle will surely be an interesting one to watch through 2016, at
least.
